Miss Lewis's PhilosophyWhen students leave my classroom, I want them to understand that learning is essential. I want them to know that everything they do, they will have a choice in the matter. My philosophy is that it will not only be my classroom, but also my students classroom. The students will understand that I am the leader in that classroom but they will also know that they can have a part in the class as well. My philosophy will be shown throughout my classroom when students make choices about certain thing, as well as when they get to make decisions pertaining to their learning. I will not be one of those teachers who gives students an assignment that they must do. I will give students a choice in the type of assignment that they do. Students all learn differently so why should I expect them to show their learning in the same way. Student directed theories, such as the one created by Alfie Kohn, supports my philosophy. The theory aims to prepare students for life in a democracy. I see theories as these supporting my philosophy because they both deal with choice making. I want to make students aware that they have a choice and so does the theory. Students need to understand that in life we all get to make choices and those choices are going to affect what and how we do something. I believe that students will definitely accomplish learning this by the time they leave my classroom.
